re: nintendo switch 2
nobody's games are so good as to justify locked-down hardware anymore, imo. this isn't the post-video game crash era anymore, there are so many good games out there... and even more shovelware, but some of that gets the nintendo seal of quality(tm) too.
there isn't the need for specific hardware anymore either, it has all converged onto either pc or tablet/phone hardware because that's good enough now.
so. it seems to me like the only thing keeping game consoles relevant now is marketing hype and exclusivity deals. y'know, peak capitalism shit. why are we encouraging this?
re: nintendo switch 2
@kit You don't need it, of course. But consoles do have an advantage for developers in that they can count on a specific set of hardware and capabilities, which means you get some creative constraints but also a minimum bar you can expect. (Of course this is mostly only relevant for exclusives, but that's a not-awful reason for things to be exclusive.)
longish, re: nintendo switch 2
@aschmitz @kit like i agree that docked consoles are mostly dead at this point, but handheld consoles definitely still have something to offer, and yes the Steam Deck exists, but how different is the Steam Deck from the Switch really? it's still a separate computer you are buying just for games; it just has broader configurability and support at the cost of worse integration and out-of-the-box experience

@Lady@glitch.cat.family @aschmitz@ostatus.lardbucket.org you got it tbh. i did say i already had a steam deck, and that is a trade i am accustomed to making and would gladly make again haha
re: nintendo switch 2
@Lady @kit Yes, though the Steam Deck gets you that if the controls are acceptable. (And by now, most non-exclusives support sufficient control customization to make it work for the bigger games.)
