So I looked it up and the UN has granted increased rights and privileges to Palestine, but the only reason that vote actually went through is because it was in the general assembly and could not be vetoed

The US reaffirmed that it will veto any and all attempts at full Palestinian membership

So this IS a good move, but there's still a lot further to go

Why the fuck does the US even HAVE that kind of veto power in the UN?

That doesn't seem like the kind of thing that belongs in a governing body like that

@coriander because the alternative is the US not being in the UN, which people have generally accepted to be a worse outcome

@coriander the whole idea behind the UN Security Council is to get the world’s most powerful players with the biggest militaries at the same table, which means that the UNSC can’t do anything which would anger those major powers and make them leave, which means they have to have veto power to prevent that

the world’s most powerful players are defined as the United States, Russia, and China

and also France and the United Kingdom for some reason
