Guantánamo Bay
« Conditions at Guantánamo Are Cruel and Inhuman, U.N. Investigation Finds » honestly not sure we needed a U.N. investigation to tell us that
Guantánamo Bay, Aus politics
@Lady we've transferred the last refugee off¹ our Pacific island concentration camp, and yet our government² is publically committed to keeping the empty concentration camp open at a cost of $350M/yr as some sort of deterrent³.
It sometimes surprises me how popular hurting the “wrong kind” of people is, and how much money and effort politicians are willing to put into it.
¹: to mainland Australia
²: Labor, nominally left-wing
³: astoundingly, the centre-left justification for indefinitely imprisoning (the wrong sort of) asylum seekers in offshore concentration camps was that, by promising to indefinitely torture asylum seekers who arrived by boat, we would deter asylum seekers from getting on boats, and so prevent deaths at sea. A policy of psychologically torturing asylum seekers until they were dead was the only humane choice, you see! Aa*aaaargh*!
