"Things are complicated now that Twitter is collapsing and self-destructing! How can we do our wide-area sampling to investigate social trends and reactions now!? We must find a way to do this in newly-arising social spaces, like the Fediverse!"

*peeks out bleary-eyed and chucks "Seeing Like A State" at you, then rolls over and goes back to sleep*

*tosses around a bit and rolls over again, and hurls "Ethnography For Dummies But Like Dummies Who Care About Doing Ethical Ethnography" at roughly the same location without opening my eyes*

"But that's so MESSY! The data we'd get from that would be so bad and ungeneralizeable--"YOUR DATA WAS ALREADY BAD, YOU JUST IGNORED THAT.

This is a subtoot, but if you're one of the people I'm subtooting know that I'm more conciliatory and softer and less confident in one-on-one conversation, and I only RARELY bite. (And probably just, not, on this topic.)

@gaditb if you're going to cover the fediverse and you haven't read imagining transgender by david valentine go do that first

@Lady I haven't read this (or, like, any basic ethnography stuff! I can't actually rec anything specific for that!), but that's why I am sleeping, and not trying to make sociological or ethnographic claims based on spurious data practices of questionable ethics.

@gaditb that's one of the reasons why i rec it; in addition to being about the racial and class politics of transgender identity it also has some very good words about how to do ethnography with marginalized queer communities to which you do not belong
