y'all, I have a serious question to folks about names.
specifically, full names from languages that are traditionally said in the "eastern" order of family name, then individual name, unlike the "western" order of individual name, then family name.
note, I'm specifically asking about full name ordering. if choosing just the family or individual name, it's extremely common for people to just say one of these names by itself. for example, in academic writing, it's common to address people solely by their family name without any honorifics, even in "western" contexts where you usually require honorific placeholders for the individual name (e.g. "Mx. Name" where the Mx is a substitute for the individual name)
note that I'm specifically choosing to avoid language like "first" and "last" name since these are specifically based upon the western order. and also specifically choosing to use "individual" name instead of "given" name since I, like many people, chose a name instead of keeping the one they were assigned at birth. (this is the definition of transgender.) (that is a joke.)
anyway, I'm curious how people (ideally, those whose names are traditionally in the "eastern" order) feel about the reordering of names in translation. specifically, do you think it's just a mechanical aspect of translation, or do you think that people's names should be said in the order they are originally?
one immediate example I can think of is how Masahiro Sakurai specifically hosts his own YouTube channel in both English and Japanese, but explicitly reorders his name for the English version; this is entirely his choice, and while I know he relies on external translators, I have to believe he is fine with this happening for his name. (I also know that he specifically chooses to have Sakurai-san
translated as Mr. Sakurai instead of just Sakurai, even though the honorific isn't required in English, since it is in Japanese.)
I personally gravitate toward ordering people's names in the native way, but I'm curious how people feel about this.
(also, since this is specifically asking for opinions, I'm fine with it being boosted. I have no idea what hashtags are appropriate here and am airing on the side of just letting people boost it instead of posting to public feeds.)
