I think my new pet peeve is people who make it seem like "everyone moving to mastodon will free us all" without realizing that a world where 95% of users are running on instances that use the stock mastodon build is better than what we have, but still not actually great.

@essentialrandom yeah there are a huge number of Mastodon SaaS instances and i mean them no shade but they are also a real barrier in actually diversifying the software ecosystem because they're locked into mainline or maybe, if you're lucky, a major fork

i think this is going to be a scaling problem with federated services in general though; like SaaS isn't going away and it's not scalable to do SaaS with diverse codebases no matter what they are
