@essentialrandom yeah there are a huge number of Mastodon SaaS instances and i mean them no shade but they are also a real barrier in actually diversifying the software ecosystem because they're locked into mainline or maybe, if you're lucky, a major fork
i think this is going to be a scaling problem with federated services in general though; like SaaS isn't going away and it's not scalable to do SaaS with diverse codebases no matter what they are

@Lady I think this reinforces my developing belief that plugins ecosystems are a fundamental and under-explored part of any solution
