@Lady Nope! And not all artists can amass followers, either, however much it'll be possible here.
Like I don't blame people for WANTING it, and don't think they should feel bad for that, but expecting it or setting yourself up to need it is a rough sort of gambling.
But I dunno where the best place of interaction to express that is.
@gaditb i typically approach these questions from the position of a designer, like, “assuming that there are artists who won’t go viral, and assuming that those artists are potentially the most interesting and radical artists and the least supported, shouldn’t they be our focus?”
i think changing the conversation from being about “all artists” and instead acknowledging that the field of artists is not flat and there are some which need our support rather than others… you have to start there

@Lady Yes absolutely that should be our focus in how we try to understand and decide on what our desired ends are, to start, but also we're not ACTING from the position of a designer -- we're acting just as individual unpriveleged nodes in the social graph and need to shape the resulting actions we decide to take based on that.
