Because of @piggo 's comment I looked up "dinner", and etymologically, "dinner" means "breakfast" - ultimately, "dis-" ("split in two" or "reverse, stop") + "ieiuno" ("I fast").
@noelle this makes sense when you remember that they didn't eat breakfast in medieval times, so the fast would be broken at lunch (called dinner)
