Metroid Dread shows you can, actually, have a silent protagonist who still has personality and who is actually engaged with the plot instead of just having the plot happen around them
But you gotta fuckin Try and I guess most devs just don't want to do that

@witchfynder_finder i really like the ending of the Toon Link saga that Spirit Tracks did, so i don’t want more of those games exactly, i just want more Zelda games where Link is actually an enjoyable human being to hang out with
