@witchfynder_finder could say similar things about star wars, the problem is that in harry potter the good guys aren’t cool rebels but instead are cops
@Lady They really are literally cops, aren't they
@witchfynder_finder yeah harry’s whole deal is he wants to grow up to be a wizard cop for some reason, it bites
@Lady She does such a good job of obfuscating that aurors are cops, too, like they sound like some other thing entirely
@witchfynder_finder i feel like he has a number of good role models to tell him like, harry my boy, don’t be a wizard cop (hagrid, dumbledore, sirius) but they never do and then two of them die
@Lady Dumbledore would have encouraged him to be a wizard cop probably but the other two definitely would not have
@witchfynder_finder yeah i think dumbledore was in his “i must Repent for all my Days of being Young and Gay” phase which is unfortunate
@witchfynder_finder @Lady aren't hagrid and sirius both technically felons
it's been a long time but i swear hagrid did something and got his magic permissions removed but he still uses it by keeping his wand pieces in an umbrella
@witchfynder_finder @monorail checking the wiki he didn’t even do anything wrong, he was just framed for opening the chamber of secrets because he was big and liked scary monsters
@witchfynder_finder @monorail i mean technically i think escaping prison is A Crime but
@Lady @witchfynder_finder not in germany
@Lady @witchfynder_finder you can be charged for other crimes you commit on the way but "escaping prison" specifically is not illegal
@Lady @witchfynder_finder iirc the justification is like "we can't really blame you for wanting to be free, that's human nature" but that's so ridiculous it can't be true
@Lady @witchfynder_finder so if the Harry potter books take place in Germany then that's ok, idr if they do though
@witchfynder_finder @Lady (I know I'm being silly)
@witchfynder_finder @monorail @Lady it's an unspecified north so probably russia/ussr/whatever and i am ashamed i remember this
@seventy @witchfynder_finder @monorail viktor krum remember
@Lady @seventy @witchfynder_finder what about the other school
@Lady @seventy @witchfynder_finder where are they from
@witchfynder_finder @monorail @Lady i assumed russia bc i dont know things
@seventy @witchfynder_finder @monorail « In an interview with Accio Quote J. K. Rowling stated that she thought Durmstrang was in Scandinavia, in the far north of either Sweden or Norway.[1] It is, however, depicted on maps featured on Pottermore as being in a more southern location (southern most part of Finland and into Russia right above Lake Ladoga, roughly); whether this is a change in canon or an error on the part of the artist of the map is uncertain » third possibility: nobody knows
@monorail @Lady @witchfynder_finder
I did a bit of searching and it is true (though not for East Germany when it existed as a country)
Among other things a draft for a law making breaking out of jail/prison illegal was rejected in 1962 because "behaviour caused by a human's natural desire of freedom should not carry a threat of punishment". (From a paper by the scientific service of the Bundestag from 2019, titled "Zur Strafbarkeit der Gefangenenselbstbefreiung", translation mine)
@monorail @Lady @witchfynder_finder HELPING someone else break out, or INCITING someone else to break out are criminal, though. 😆
@monorail @Lady @witchfynder_finder
And it doesn't confer immunity for other crimes committed during a breakout, like damage to property or assault.
@witchfynder_finder so you lose either way
