they go on a long journey full of dangers, including various predators, mankind, and other hostile rabbits. along the way we learn about the fictional language, culture, and mythology of rabbits

they are real life tiny rabbits, not anthropomorphized cartoon rabbits. the story is fairly "realistic" (as realistic a story can be with wild animals communicating with each other with language), although there are dashes of magical realism here and there
