@vaporeon_ what are your computer specs it could give inspiration
@wallhackio It also has two floppy disk drives attached to it, one 5.25-inch and one 3.5-inch floppy disk drive!
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio quad core?
@onfy @wallhackio Yes! Why the question?
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio i didn't realize
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio hmmmmm........ you gonna test games?
@onfy @wallhackio Sure, once I get graphics on it, which will still take a while
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio how are you currently using it?
@onfy @wallhackio Currently, I'm still setting it up... Figuring out ZFS and kernel config took a while. Next step is to install GRUB, I'm just taking a break.
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio oh, ok
@onfy @wallhackio Is that unexpected? I just finished assembling it on Friday, and then I spent most of yesterday deciding on the ZFS setup...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio i mean i just like, when in doubt, debian
@onfy @wallhackio ZFS isn't even about operating system, it's about how I want to organise the hard drives
The issue that I have an entire box of 1TB hard drives, but I want more than 1TB storage, but also I want my system to survive if one of my hard drives fail
ZFS is neat because it can have an encrypted filesystem across multiple hard drives
Problem is that I didn't like ZFSbootmenu and wanted to set it up in a way that I can still do a normal boot with GRUB
Also, I like Gentoo and I want to use Gentoo
@onfy @wallhackio If you ask about how inxi currently displays that I have 1TB of storage: Problem is that I don't have enough SATA cables to connect the third hard drive... I'll connect the third hard drive whenever I find another SATA cable.
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio what i mean is like, i don't do stuff that complicated
when i want to waste a day to a computer... and it's rare i get to do that now, i lose it to dos...
@onfy @wallhackio I'm fine with spending a few days configuring the computer to get the setup exactly as I need it (though I admit that I also have some unusual requirements)
Also, I still feel rather tired, the exertion on Wednesday carrying home that ATX case really wasn't good for me... That definitely slows down everything...
Now I just need to install GRUB and see whether it works and then figure out how to tell GRUB about my DOS partition and then reboot again and then I can start installing all the software and X11 and such
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio yeah i think i'm too old for that kind of exertion now...
(here's hoping byd cars will be affordable here)
telling grub about dos shouldn't be difficult
@onfy @wallhackio What are byd cars? ![]()
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio chinese electric cars
i hear that cost around $14,000 us in china but also over 30,000 euros in europe...
@onfy @wallhackio I didn't expect it to be possible to put a quad-core CPU onto that motherboard, either, but the listing on eBay had offered it with that CPU inside, and it seems to work well, compiles Gentoo at a reasonable speed, though compiling CMake itself took somewhat longer because 2GB memory is not enough for it and it was swapping...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio you said it's am3? it's probably not too old
@onfy @wallhackio It's this motherboard: https://theretroweb.com/motherboard/manual/motherboard-manual-ga-m57sli-s4-e-683f4e8052ad5663311914.pdf
I was confused about it, but y'all on here told me that AM3 is backwards-compatible with AM2...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio even i'm confused
@wallhackio Is this helpful?
