@vaporeon_ fedi definitely made me more autistic
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio yeah i think that's it
most people get super annoyed when i go on about these sorts of topics, fedi is somewhere my friends are happy to get a few poorly written paragraphs on the intricacies of irrelevant things
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio i'm thinking of that study again that said autistic people are less likely to talk about things they like
and some were theorizing that it's less that we dislike talking about what we like, and more we learn not to because it makes those around us angry
@onfy @wallhackio I do very much like talking about computer and I'll talk about them at anyone who will listen
But it certainly is much more enjoyable to talk computers with someone who can respond and tell me things about computers that I didn't know
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio even if it's someone who doesn't know, but they're interested in hearing about it, it's better than being told to shut up and that you're annoying
worst thing is even i'm sometimes guilty of that
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio for a lot of my life i did feel alone in my interests, no one wanted to know so all i could do was keep it to myself
@onfy @wallhackio I do feel very alone because nobody wants to talk to me in general...
If anyone will attempt to start conversation with Vaporeon (why would they do that?), I will tell then everything about my computer stuff
@onfy @wallhackio Last time I talked to someone I didn't know well, I told them about the Voyager and how they were remotely debugging the 50-year-old code (that was really impressive)
@onfy @wallhackio I also told them about COBOL, about which I was reading a book at that point
But they were also a colleague from my job, and I guess you don't take that job if you don't at least somewhat like computers and C programming...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio there's probably someone just doing it for the paycheque...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio it's a very impressive skill, i'm not sure i could do that
but i guess it was written with this in mind? i doubt it's like a video game where they want to hide the details
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio that is very fun!
sorry for not responding about the imac power supply, it's interesting but i don't know what to say. i just assume it's a proprietary variant like in compaq pcs...
@onfy @wallhackio Yeah, it's a proprietary variant, that's why I had to try replacing the capacitors instead of just using a different power supply...
This article https://www.instructables.com/Fixing-an-iMac-g5-Power-Supply-using-an-ATX-pc-P/ claims that it's possible to adapt a standard ATX PSU for it (though it'll be missing 20V output and therefore the display might not work well), so if we decide that the G5 PSU is completely unrecoverable, I guess that's what we'll need to do...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio i know it's possible with compaq, but it's literally just atx with a different pinout to enforce oem parts
20v is really strange, why 20?
@onfy @wallhackio For the built-in display of the iMac! Not sure why it needs 20V, but I guess it does...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio the power supply is running the display. i guess it makes sense it needs higher voltage then but wowie
i should've really clued in how imac had a display
is it crt or lcd?
@onfy @wallhackio Depends on the model of iMac, but the G5 (which we're trying to fix) has an LCD... It also has a 64-bit PowerPC CPU, while all my other PowerPC hardware is 32-bit! That's why it's interesting to me and I'm willing to put quite a lot of effort into fixing it.
There is an older iMac, the iMac G3 (the Wikipedia has some photos: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G3), which has a CRT, but I've only used it in the computer museum, I unfortunately don't own it...
@onfy @wallhackio The iMac G3 is an extremely beautiful design, but also it doesn't have a floppy disk drive... :(
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio oh, of course i see...
i wondered if crt would also be 20v but they did make portable crt with a low voltage dc input... but most of them are also monochrome and they're all tiny
@onfy @wallhackio They made portable CRTs? Need to see... ![]()
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio there are very many, like this one that can run on 9 d batteries! https://www.ebay.ca/itm/267480144607
@onfy @wallhackio I assume that this is just for TV and radio and not for connecting a computer to it? I don't see a VGA input...
Then again, desktop computers can have a proper, good CRT monitor with colour support and not just greyscale on the desk, and laptops have a built-in LCD...
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio there were early "luggable" computers with tiny crt
not sure portable separate vga monitors were a thing. i can't think if any
i think there was a crt that could be mounted in the computer case
@onfy @wallhackio And then you can't connect any CD/DVD drives at all to your computer because the entire 5.25-inch drive bay is taken up by the monitor
@vaporeon_ @wallhackio many cases had 4 or even more bays back then
just not this one :)
@wallhackio I was always full of autism, but this website definitely gave me a community who shares my special interest and lets me pursue it better :3
