I started playing Arkham City last night, only the second time I've played it and the last time was over a decade ago (good god...), and it's definitely good, it makes some mechanical improvements over Arkham Asylum, but it already feels so much like a standard misguided superhero sequel. "This thing was good, so let's just make everything BIGGER! AND MORE!"

Also somehow a lot of the animations are worse

Also also I adore Tara Strong but she is very obviously doing Arleen Sorkin's Harley in a way that makes it extremely obvious that she is not Arleen Sorkin

Anyway that point I'm trying to make is that a big part of what Asylum is the high water mark of video games that it is is its very considered scale and restraint. It's a story about the Joker and Harley Quinn which also features cameos from Killer Croc and Poison Ivy and small references to your favourite Batman Glup Shitto (except Kite Man 😭 ). It does what it needs to do for that story and then it's over.

@coriander i have fond memories of when i was a kid of going to costco, back in the day when costco had video game demos, and playing the fighting mini game from Arkham Asylum. my family never had a ps3-generation console at the time so it was my only chance to play it.

so yeah i have to agree that it is the greatest game of all time
