Whenever I complain about the lack of floppy disk drives or serial ports or parallel ports or SD card readers on laptops, y'all keep telling me that this can be done over USB...

Does this mean that y'all carry a big bag of adapters everywhere? USB to all the other ports that you might need and also floppy and DVD and SD card? How do you not lose your adapters?
