Question: Why would you set up something like Plex or Jellyfin as opposed to just running a web server with a bunch of .mp4 files on it? What's the benefit?

Admittedly, the only thing I'm currently watching is Pokémon, but "just put a bunch of files on a web server" is the setup that I use for that...

@vaporeon_ metadata fetching, transcoding, remembering what episode you are on in a series

@aescling Transcoding? :psyduck:
Why is there a need for that (for transcoding)?

@vaporeon_ my roommate has a media library of music stored in apple’s lossless media format. some of my devices do not know how to play that music and it is convenient to be able to silently transcode them to FLAC on the fly while streaming

@aescling Why not just run a script once to transcode all of them? Lack of storage?

@vaporeon_ she is protective of her media library, up to and including what format it is being stored in, because she is purrticular about metadata management
