"Grand Theft Auto" is a weird name

"Big Theft [of] Car"

Also, why is it "Grand Theft Auto" and not "Grand Auto Theft"? I don't understand the word order

@onfy Hmm, OK... And what's up with "Auto"? I never heard English speakers refer to a car as "auto" in any other context? Is it an old word? Why is it "Grand Theft Auto" and not "Grand Theft of Auto"?

@vaporeon_ @onfy it is attested to use ”auto” as short fur “automobile”, which i understand to be a bit dated, but still survives in terms like “auto loan” (loan fur a car), or, well, you know

@vaporeon_ @onfy typically its usage is adjectival so it’s not weird to hear things like “auto mechanic”. but fur whatever reason, just calling a car an “auto” would be very abnormal
