magic the gathering

one neat thing about taking a four-year break from this game is how much better i feel about proxies now. i used to play in sanctioned events for $5 every few weeks because it was a fun way to spend an evening, but now FNM costs $13 and the modern format is just as full of free spells as legacy

so why not just play legacy, where the events all allow a minimum of 15 proxies because everyone is running ridiculous cards that were printed exactly five times in the 90s so they're ballooned to hundreds of dollars for 1.7 grams of cardstock, and nobody can reasonably afford that

wotc even printed their own proxies! at a grand for 60 cards 😂

i like the strategy of this game but the economics were always ridiculous, and it's only gotten worse after toys-r-us went under and hasbro started pushing their one actual profitable product line to print more money for them

@starfall apparently pokemon tcg economics are very reasonable (no im not presently obsessed wtf are you talking about i would never)

@aescling ye we very nearly got into pokemon around 2018, a competitive pokemon deck is not much more expensive than the budget FNM-level decks we built for mtg
