saw the super mario bros. movie (2023) last night

it's not good?

when the trailers for wreck-it ralph (2012) were releasing, i got the distinct impression it was just gonna be a bland ninety minutes of cheap video game references and not actually tell a deep or compelling story

i went into that film with low expectations and i was very pleasantly surprised that, about fifteen minutes in, the references stopped entirely and it turned into a wholesome and heartwarming story of friendship and self-discovery between two totally original characters

it's one of my favourite films to this day. i love wreck-it ralph

the super mario bros. movie is the film i was afraid wreck-it ralph would be

why did they do it like this

Follow

@00dani i have been consistently surpurrised by how often i do not see the opinion that the movie is bad, but rather fine, when it’s fur the most part just so contentedly mid

@00dani the one thing i did like is that bowser decides to make an enemy out of mario on the MERE off chance that he would steal his girl, which i genuinely thought was fucking hilarious. the only contrivance in the movie i actually thought was justified lmao. that joke deserves an actually passable movie

@aescling oh yeah that ruled

jack black's bowser was the standout actually funny and interesting character. he's so good

everyone else was just whatever

even anya taylor joy's princess peach, which is :( because i love anya taylor joy
