#newbie question (sorry!) I’ve seen some posts which are much longer than 500 characters. Is it an instance setting that permits this or did I miss something very obvious?

@kieron you need access to the machine your instance is running on; if you’re using hosting you’re probably out of luck unless you can, like, ask the staff to change this for you or something
anyway, n the glitch fork you need to adjust the environment variable MAX_TOOT_CHARS for the mastodon-web process; i’m not sure if the same works in upstream or not though
