a lot of the character animation in ssbm is kinda great

Follow

really does make me sad that the character animation in nick all-star brawl is simply bad lol

apparently there’s been Discourse on smash twitter over whether the game looks good or not, with some people saying people are just “spoiled” by smash. but uh my take is it is not being spoiled to call bad character animation bad lol

anyway idk i haven’t developed any takes about like, art design or like, How Good The Graphics Are or whatever because the animation stands out so much to me

i think spongebob’s model is quite good though

the game design really doesn’t help here because it plays really fast and has no hitstun and moves seem to have little startup or endlag, leaving little room for anticipation or follow through; that’s not the animators’ fault and yeah it’s hard to work with

i wonder how project sora got smash ultimate sheik to work given that she has all those qualities i described

@compufox i do like the models, and some of the victory screen animation is actually very good (see the end of the first game) but yeah in game i don’t think the animation is appealing or even, like, functional as game animation

@aescling okay so after watching some of the clip: i can see a little of what youre talking about., like. the animations are lackluster

but what really gets me is how *quiet* the game is? like. all there is is just the sound effects, the characters arent reacting or vocalizing so it just feels *empty* and weird. and imo thats a bigger issue than the animations

@compufox i agree; i just focus on animation because it’s important to me for whatever reason and also particularly because this game is competing with a series with incredible animation, so i can’t help comparing

@aescling yeah i definitely understand that.

i also dont like how the blocking is literally just holding a pose. like? i feel like thats hard to read, esp when youre in the thick of the fight.
