"My grandmother left the Central Telegraph office a little later, after she had written up a report on her shift. She walked home from work, enjoying the deserted streets, taking detours to shop in the shops, which were, for once, empty of people. The constant roar of truck engines was was unsettling, but for the first time in a long time, perhaps the first time since Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union a dozen years earlier, she felt hope. A new era was beginning."

I am having real trouble parsing this sentence in any way that doesn't valorize the Nazi invasion

Update: revised parse tree provided, I think we're good now!

@secretasianman the natural parsing to me would be that the Nazi’s invading the Soviet Union was what killed her hope (and thus is a bad thing) and she had only felt hope before that when things were better

@Satsuma @secretasianman yeah, that’s how i read it. The nazis invaded, hope died, and now hope blooms again

@sus @Satsuma whew that's a much better parsing. Maybe "since before" would make that obvious
