mom related whining

idk how to reply when my mom tells me she’s nervous about something i’m doing. like, i’m sorry, that’s not…my problem??

i’m going to nyc (for the first time) this weekend and she texted me “needless to say i’m a little nervous.”

it always feels like there’s this implication that if something bad would happen to me (nebulous thought) it would be my fault?? for being…out in the world???

i could’ve replied “don’t worry!! it’ll be fine! blah blah blah” but i’m soooo 🫩 my mom fully wanted me to cancel my amsterdam trip earlier this year, up until the weekend i left.

my mom: *worried something awful might happen to me*
also my mom: *not interested in what i’m going to do on a trip*

@pastelsinmysky i hope you enjoy NYC! i’ve been a few times and its always been fun

as for your mom, i think its normal for parents to worry about their kids a bit, but it seems v inappropriate for her to try to pressure you to cancel your trips. as your parent, her anxiety is *her* job to manage not yours (i mean also in general adults need to take responsibility for their own mental health rather than expecting someone else to manage their shit but especially when its your parents!)

also, and i hope this ones obvious if something did happen to you in nyc (which i really don’t think it will!) it wouldn’t be your fault—that’s a gross victim blamey mindset
