I don't know enough about symbol-based AAC, which is what I think would work best for him, so instead I'm giving him PIDW style weird AAC. It's a musical instrument.

@transfemwulian the guqin is a fun choice! gives you a big scale to work with AND you can do chords so theres lots of options
also, they sound really pretty
