@Satsuma a good question! I don't have a useful or actionable vision, bc if I did, I'd be the change I wish to see and write the fic myself. but here's what I do know I want!

I want a many-thousands-of-words fic from prince yu's pov that's interested in his obsession with mei changsu, and in his self-centred view of the world where he can't understand when things are not about him. obv there'd also be stuff about how he thinks about banruo too, to parallel these two advisor characters with secret identities who manipulate prince yu to achieve their own goals

prob this would be a fic set somewhere mid-canon, and would be full of dramatic ironies where the reader knows how canon goes and so can read things into other character motivations that prince yu doesn't have context to understand. There could also be some juicy layers with the parallels between prince yu and his father the emperor, and the ways that having imperial power warps the people who have it
