Fandom people, I’m curious: if you like being on Fedi and you’ve stayed active for a while, what keeps you here?

If you’re new (or if you remember why you joined), what brought you here?

#Fandom

For me, I’d say it’s three main things:

1. My trust in my instance’s mods - they won’t auto-ban me if I get mass reported, they’ll take action if an abusive user is brought to their attention, etc.

2. The control over my timeline - filters and “hide from home” lists, oh my goodness, thank you Mastodon devs

3. The prevalence of alt text - this is a super important accessibility thing for me, even if my visual processing is doing okay that day, because it means my filters can catch images

Looking through the replies under this post, it looks like people's reasons to stay fall into four categories:

Software features! (customization of timeline, good filters, ability to edit posts, content warning cuts, the ability to make your posts private)

Lack of user-hostile features! (like ads, an algorithm that wants you to be upset so you engage more, data collection, etc. - this place is successfully run by donations, so there’s no need to squeeze money from the users)

The mods are trustworthy! (the moderation is done by humans who you can talk to, and blorbo.social explicitly bans fancops/antis and encourages kinky queer porn)

It’s quieter and smaller here, and the people are chill! (we focus on joyful sharing and discussions instead of drama, we have meaningful and supportive interactions with each other, and we leave nice comments on unpolished art and personal posts)

@xieliansbignaturals those are all good reasons! and also i feel do feed into eachother a bit—like cws allow mod teams to be more generous in what kinds of content they allow, and the lack of user hostile features means we’re all less on edge/more fun when we interact with eachother

@Satsuma Yes, I absolutely agree! 🥺 I think it's no accident that people are chill here.
