If I were to make a Dreamwidth, what should I know? Like, things like “on Fedi, you should use a CW for art with eye contact.” I think part of why I’ve procrastinated on making an account there is… it’s not like Bluesky, there’s got to be a culture there already. I’m scared of stepping on people’s toes!

@xieliansbignaturals while there is a culture there, it also depends on the specific pocket? So it’s not a monolith in that sense, and things tend to be slower.

If people feel strongly about following/commenting/linking, they’ll say something about it on their profile or pinned post, so it can be helpful to check those.

There’s an idea sometimes that Dreamwidth posts need to be long and detailed; no! Some people post often, some sporadically, some tend to do longer posts and others short ones.

@xieliansbignaturals Because there aren’t reblogs/etc. people sometimes have “three links make a post” type posts, or create a post with interesting links (could be Dreamwidth posts, off-site posts, or both).

Communities are great, both for finding conversation and interests, and for finding people to talk to and/or follow. They all work a little differently so check the profile and pinned post for any guidelines.

You have to be a little more engaged to interact without likes etc. It’s nice!

@bluedreaming Thank you so much! I'm glad that posts don't need to be long and detailed, because that's not my style. Even my fic is microfic 😆

@bluedreaming @xieliansbignaturals it might just be that i joined both at the same time, but in my experience dreamwidth’s culture has some definite overlaps with fandom fedi’s—they’re both more text heavy than twitter/bluesky/tumblr and allow people to be a bit longer/more rambly in their posts but short posts are also very welcome

also like fedi the site has built in user added content warnings—you can flag posts (or your whole blog) as 18+, and people use dreamwidths cut tag (kinda like a fedi cw, except it only applies to part of a post instead of the whole thing) for both actual warnings and more casual utility (eg. to shorten overlong posts, to hide the punchline of a joke, media spoilers, to make it easier to skip digressions from the main “topic”)

@xieliansbignaturals @bluedreaming also, if you decide to make an account ask people to rec you communities (somewhere between a group blog and a forum) since finding active ones is a lil tricky but they make the site so much more fun!
