gender-y underwear question, debatably gross

say you are running a thrift store that sells lightly used underwear. you have 2 bins to put them in. how do you sort/label them if you want to separate the boxers and briefs from the panties?

"men's/women's" is obviously out. so far the best I've come up with is "masculine underwear" and "feminine underwear," but I feel like it could be better?

@twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth is labeling them "boxers/briefs" and "panties" out of the question?

gender-y underwear question

@pagrus @arisingvoice @eldaking @JockJamJen "boxers/briefs" vs "panties" seems to be the most popular solution! I'm a little hesitant about this one, because underwear that is marketed for women is also often labeled as briefs, and because of a personal distaste for the word "panties" that I think is not unique to me. but it is definitely clear and accessible!

gender-y underwear question

@twistylittlepassages @pagrus @eldaking @JockJamJen Sure, I totally get the distaste for "panties". My suggestion was more along the lines of whatever you can do to describe the underwear in both a way that makes sense, isn't distasteful and tries not to gender them. I did like some of the other ideas in this thread about cut labelling, for example (I only saw it after suggesting), so that could be a viable option.

@arisingvoice@weirder.earth @twistylittlepassages@weirder.earth @eldaking@weirder.earth @JockJamJen@allpro.social I mean, is it important that they be separated at all? What would happen if you just put them all together

gender-y underwear question

@pagrus @arisingvoice @eldaking @JockJamJen great question! in this specific situation, it would be more annoying to dig through, and the bin would be too full. but theoretically not a bad solution!

gender-y underwear question

@arisingvoice @pagrus @twistylittlepassages @eldaking @JockJamJen as someone who has strong feelings about synthetics (namely “no” a ‘10% plastic or less’ and ‘10% plastic or more’) sorting system would make a lot of sense—leave the super-stretch to people who’ll appreciate it!

gender-y underwear question

@Satsuma oh that's a really interesting distinction! I don't think we could maintain it, because so many people cut tags off, but I wonder what it would look like to sort them this way :thinking_fire:

gender-y underwear question

@twistylittlepassages yeah it may not be practical, and it might end up backfiring on me (ie. most people dont care enough to sort but when faced with the two options choose ‘less plastic’) but i do think there are ways to usefully narrow the search scope besides sorting by which gender / anatomy a pair is traditionally associated with!
