I picked up this book at a flea market a couple of years ago because the cover design caught my eye, and I'm finally reading it

It's from the late 19th century (first English edition is from 1913) and this copy is from 1958. It cost $1.95 when it was new, or about $20 in 2023 money.

It's really interesting and beautifully-written, and despite its age it's still being used in medieval history courses.

It was kind of amusing to see it mention the Physiologus as a source of inspiration for medieval symbolism (the Physiologus is the book that gave us "hares grow a new anus every year" and "hyenas change gender every other year" which eventually got interpreted into "this is why you shouldn't have gay sex")
