@Satsuma when mom was meeting with the funeral director after great-grandma died he regaled her with stories of all the many expensive renovations he'd be making to the building. when she told him that she didn't know where she would get the money to pay for the funeral he told her she should sell the house (that has been in the family for a hundred years and is the only place she could afford to live).
there's a reason she didn't really rush to pay him but the fact that he didn't send it to a collections agency a decade ago is ????
