Me: "Hm, I should schedule the first few days of Nanowrimo off, like I usually do. But I just took a week's staycation, and I know I'll want some other days off in November. Lemme check how much time-off I have banked."
Timecard Program: "6 weeks and some change."
Me: o_O
Me: "... yeah, guess I can schedule some more time off."

I feel like I've taken So Many staycations since the pandemic started. But it just doesn't compare with the amount of travel I did in the before times.

@Rowyn Wow. Yep, definitely gonna get off to a good start on NaNo XD

@vicorva My typical Nanowrimo plan is "write as much as possible on the first three days of November, and then see if you can make 50k before the end. 😂

I usually have a lot going on in November, so getting a good head start is important to morale. This November, I might be going to a small local con and later to visit my parents, depending on how COVID-19 numbers look.

@Rowyn oh that is busy!

I have another friend with a similar strategy (though she rarely makes it to 50k unless she does it in the first 3 days, which she does about half the time). I like getting a head start but I can't put out very big numbers and sometimes I get burnt out. Trying to find the right balance.

At least my Novembers aren't unusually busy though!

@vicorva 50k in three days is way too many words for me. 😂 I usually manage over 10k in the first three days, which has been good enough for the last few years. We'll see how this one goes! If I really do have two trips in November, I don't think I'll make it to 50k, tho.

@Rowyn @vicorva 10k is still a pretty impressive three days!

@Satsuma @Rowyn it's enormously impressive! But then that's Rowyn. :)

Said friend often gets ill or quits nano after their big writing splurge and I don't believe has ever gone back to any story they wrote that way, whether it was finished or not. So I don't think they would recommend the method (though I'm sure there are some who would!)

@vicorva @Satsuma @Rowyn thanks for reminding me that I want to start sketching out what I want to write about.

@maloki @vicorva @Satsuma good plan, it's much easier when you already know what you want to do with the story! 😊

@vicorva @Satsuma goodness, no, that would not be my recurring approach. 😓
