why did they make the internet fast. it was better when it was slow

@Lady do you think it was better because it was slow?

@bea i think big data was harder when the data took longer, so kind of, yes

@bea there are too many bits being carried around all the time and the problem is the magnitude of the bits not their speed exactly but limiting the speed seems like the clearest and most straightforward way to limit their magnitude

@bea well for example i seem to remember discord basically keylogging and sending back to the server every single keypress you made as an informational log message and that simply would not be possible if the time it took to send a message was 10 times the amount of time a keypress takes

web scraping to build massive a·i datasets would not be possible if there were a small, reasonable limit on the amount of bandwidth which could be delivered at one time to any geographic location

website bloat, user tracking systems, etc all require massive bandwidth usage and have been enabled primarily by increasing internet speeds

and the internet worked fine before all of this. granted if you wanted to watch a video it took a long time to download and you had to plan it in advance but. the current state of things just seems incredibly wasteful, aesthetically and environmentally and psychically

@Lady ah thanks gotcha, yeah it does enable all kinds of shit that sucks!
