thinking back on my thread yesterday about 2024 AOTYs and I'm thinking its especially a standout year for hip-hop from the American South

standout albums from BigXthePlug (Dallas, TX), Glorilla (Memphis, TN), and Denzel Curry (Miami Gardens, FL) make a good case for that I think

all three of the aforementioned artists are very different stylistically (flows, accents, topics) and I think at this point "Southern hip-hop" as a genre descriptor has become meaningless because it is a overly broad term describing a lot of very different styles of American hip-hop.

I'm just happy as a hip-hop head to have so much stylistic variety in sounds, flows, topics, and accents when it comes to hip-hop - and that's just English language hip-hop from USA.

that said, still a pet peeve when people say things like "east coast boom bap" like that means much anymore

like Benny the Butcher and Nas are both "east coast" but Benny is from Buffalo, NY while Nas is from New York City, NY - those are very different culturally and it is apparent in their music!

sure there are stylistic elements that are similar - namely production in the "boom bap" style but that's where that ends

east coast where motherfucker?!
