i think my next laptop is not going to be a mac

the phone-computer-watch integration is very nice, but it's not enough convenience to outweigh how
useless macos has been when i'm trying to do anything even a little bit unix-y with it, even using a linux virtual machine

hopefully the new snapdragon arm processors and laptops built with it will be good, cuz it's definitely an upgrade in some ways from x86_64

@kit i’m probably going to stick with macOS for work, because homebrewed OSes just magnify the “works/doesn’t work on my machine” factor, but i’m strongly considering making my current one the last laptop of theirs i buy

@kit i have an M1; it will probably be officially supported for another four years; if i replace the battery near the end of that it probably still has a decade of life

i’ll stick with macOS for as long as it seems tolerable and hopefully linux on M1 will be in a good place by the time that i bail

@Lady@glitch.cat.family that's fair; i got bit by this hard yesterday, when my work machine's debian install bricked itself so hard that i decided to blow all that away and move to nixos fully, since i already had a home-manager configuration...

but i'm kind of a special case in that my job is sometimes dealing with crap like this. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone else right now unless they're in a similar position
