i appreciate the scholar.social admin replying to people who fuck up their image descriptions or don't use CWs on the public timeline or whatever but also it makes all of those posts federate here, meaning a disproportionate amount of the traffic we receive is from people who DON’T follow the rules

@socrates you may want to consider making those posts followers-only? (your call whether visibility of the post or not federating subpar content is more important)

@socrates actually i don't think followers-only would help, it would have to be mentioned-only

@socrates thanks for your hard work and i do appreciate it; just wanted to make sure you were aware of the federation consequences of replying to a post also federating the original :)

@Lady I put it as Unlisted, because I figured that would clog up timelines the least while still getting a little bit of the "oh shit other people can see this" reaction

But I'm happy to change it if it's spamming you

@socrates eh, it's a larger issue with the fediverse honestly; there are people who i don't like and nobody here follows who are nevertheless permanent fixtures on our federated timeline because they make posts which get lots of replies

i don't like that pattern, i think it elevates the wrong kinds of posts, but i don't have any ideas off the top of my head on how to change it; mastodon needs a "reply only to original audience" post setting honestly

as far as posts from your instance goes, i've never seen anything horribly objectionable and it is nice to click the post and see that you're on top of it :). at the same time, if it weren't for the reply we probably never would have seen the post in the first place, so you know. it's up to you how you want to balance that and i won't have a problem either way
