Question about Drawing / Art :boost_ok:

I can't really draw that well. Admittedly I don't practice that much, but I think part of it is that I don't really understand drawing.

I checked my local art center but they're not really doing beginner drawing classes that I can find, anyway. Though I had one years ago and the only thing I recall from that class was the teacher's annoyance that we didn't pre-darken our paper with charcoal, because she felt it would be a better representation if we started with like, a middle tone? I think that was it.

I like to draw from life (and then get sad when I suck at it) and I remember seeing a post On Here that talked about what either the poster or their professor felt should be taught in art class to actually help with your art. (ie: Life drawing is focusing on the wrong thing).

  1. Do you have any idea what I'm actually supposed to focus on?
  2. Do you have any like, drawing tutorials I can reference?

@lapis @noelle the one thing i see again and again re: drawing is the idea that your drawing should be recognizable whether you’ve been working on it two minutes or two hours. drawing from life is useful if you “have the eye of an artist” and “know how to draw”: if you can look at something, discern its fundamental shapes, and make a quick sketch which captures its “motion”. but it’s easy to get embroiled in details and photorealism and miss out on those fundamental skills.

i think one thing which can help with making art is learning how to “read” art critically: how to look at someone else’s artwork and understand the decisions and approaches they made as an artist. this won’t make you instantly good at those things, but if you can better understand what other people are doing, then you will have an idea of what you yourself need to study.
