Things exist beyond their mere physical form and persist throughout time and change, an apple sitting on the counter all week is the same apple on Monday when it's fresh as on Friday when it's half-rotten. When you replace the ship board-by-board over time, the new boards become part of the ship As Such.
You could do a complete overhaul of the ship all at once and it would still be the same ship
@witchfynder_finder i mean arguably the answer is “it is up to the speaker and audience” since the identity of a bunch of boards as “a ship”, much less “the same ship”, is a human construct
we say contemporary english is a different language from old english, for example, despite there being a continuum between them
but that distinction is arbitrary and human-created
