While I'm at it, I'm gonna say right now that if you think German is a "harsh" or "ugly" language, it's because you've never heard actual German being spoken in regular conversation and have only heard Hollywood German

Actual German is a beautiful, fun, inventive language that, yes, does have more fricatives than English, but the act of speaking it is incredibly fluid and dynamic, not at all harsh

Americans who have never spoken to anyone from Germany: German is such an ugly language!!

Germans: I keep my hands warm in the winter with these nice wool hand-shoes :)

English: These are headphones because they go on your head and also we have to use old words from other languages for things

German: These are head-listeners because they go on your head and you listen to them

@witchfynder_finder i don’t bat an eye at these sorts of constructions in Chinese but German is so close to English, where we do things very differently, that it just seems much stranger for some reason

@Lady Yeah, you would almost expect it to be like der Batt or something but nope they went a whole other way with it

Like, German and English aren't that similar lexically but it FEELS like they should be

@witchfynder_finder German has that feel of like, that cousin who you KNOW is related to you, but you haven’t seen in god knows how many years, so you just kinda give each other funny looks all evening

@Lady Me early in German: Okay so they're related languages, I expect our pronouns will sound at least a little similar?

German: ich, du,

Me: Okay...

German: er/sie/es

Me: Okay you lost me
